The History of Oakbridge University
In May 1989, Rev. Dr. Judith Coates, her husband Rev. Thomas Coates (recently retired from Unity Church), and I, Rev. Dr. Eva McGinnis, gathered with several supporters at a restaurant in Federal Way, WA, for an exploratory visioning conversation. After nearly three hours of heartfelt discussion, we emerged with a shared vision to establish a nonprofit organization.

Our vision was fueled by a deep belief in ushering in a New Age of Peace—one rooted in reverence for all sentient beings, the awakening of each person’s Divine potential, and the embodiment of Love through action.

We saw ourselves as a core "resonating" group creating a center of Light for the empowerment of all persons committed to fulfilling their highest spiritual potential. Bringing "heaven to earth" we often said. We were excited about being the catalysts for evolution of consciousness.
We saw education and spiritual practice as the means of awakening people to their divine nature, complete with better health, prosperity, longevity and happiness. We considered ourselves seeds of conscious evolution.
We decided to continue meeting regularly to hear Tom's dynamic messages and to build a spiritual community. At first, we thought that we would purchase land and create a physical space where we would live together. That part did not materialize as we all had various life commitments and family and work plans.
Nevertheless, we had good attendance at Sunday services (Oakbridge Chapel) and events under Tom's leadership, stemming from his many years of as a Unity minister. We had musicians, singers and many enthusiastic spiritual seekers from across the Puget Sound area join us.
After forming the organization, it took a few weeks before we chose the name Oakbridge, which means a "bridge to God" and agreed on the mission statement. We wanted the name to be not obviously religious but still meaningful. Tom applied for Oakbridge University to be a 501(c)3 organization for our religious and educational mission and we received it fairly quickly. We agreed that publishing a monthly newsletter (Expanding Viewpoint) was necessary to keep our community informed. At roughly the same time Tom and Judi formed a publishing company to bring spiritually-themed books into the world. They named it Oakbridge Press. (It has been dissolved in 2024 with Rev. Judith’s retirement.)
We trusted that Spirit would guide us in how to fulfill the broader mission and provide the necessary support. And this was before Judi started channeling Jeshua around 1993-94. (It was a process.)
Channeling was relatively new phenomenon and there was both excitement about it and suspicion of it. Some people left the group, while new ones joined us. We met in a variety of venues from hotel conference rooms for an Easter week, a school library and a college classroom. We had a book store under Judi's leadership as well. For a while it resided along with an Oakbridge office in a shopping district.
But with Judi and Tom traveling a lot with Jeshua during the early days, the office work proved to be easier done from their home office. We had monthly meetings from their spacious home in Northeast Tacoma for many years. (They also hosted other channelers like John Mark Hammer.) Tom and Judi had many ties to the East Coast (Pennsylvania in particular) where Tom had been a Unity minister and Florida and made annual trips there, as well as to Canada, Jamaica and even New Zealand.
With the coming of Mother Mary and Father Joseph through channeling, Judi and Tom began the annual Advances, which took us to various places in Colorado, to Whistler in Canada, Maui, and even an Alaska cruise and of course, in Sequim and Port Angeles, WA. Attendance was usually 40- 60 people and there were excellent guest workshops as well. Tom meticulously recorded and transcribed much of the Jeshua material over the years.
Oakbridge University has ordained four ministers thus far: Judith Coates, Eva McGinnis, Josie Johnson-Rogers and Bill Evans (even though he was already ordained in his previous church.)
The Expanding Viewpoint, which recorded Jeshua channelings was mailed out manually to hundreds of people all over the world. Tom and Judi published six books of Jeshua: The Personal Christ series before they moved to the Olympic Peninsula in 2013. Tom's passed suddenly in 2014. Judi has carried on bravely ever since. Three more Jeshua books have been published since then.
The reach of Jeshua's messages has grown since the advent of zoom capability. At the same time the restrictions and after effects of COVID have brought fewer in-person events. The gift of the Jeshua YouTube channel is bringing international attention to the Jeshua teachings, with almost 900 subscribers. We have over a thousand people receiving the Daily Jeshua message and an active Prayer ministry.
Over the years Oakbridge University has offered dynamic courses including the Archangels series with Rev. Dr. Kimberly Marooney and the Intuition series with Rev. Bill Evans. Also, all the Jeshua books have had book study sessions beginning in 2016. In 2022 the first credit students enrolled in the Jeshua: The Personal Christ Vol.8 Book study.
Recently the Master of Arts in Transformational Spirituality has been activated. Both Judi and Eva McGinnis have received their PhDs which gives Oakbridge University the credentialed faculty to conduct a Master degree program.
Over the years Oakbridge University has been blessed to have caring and involved Boards of Directors that have been the core group of volunteers of the organization. Your support in many areas has kept the organization strong and functioning. Thank you so very much for being a part of this strong beacon of light to thousands of people around the world.
